Improving health outcomes for our communities

Dental research is a major contributor to positive health outcomes and informs our teaching with transformative goals to make significant improvements in the oral and general health of the public; enhance the quality of life of local, Australian, regional and communities worldwide through improved knowledge of disease aetiology, prevention and management; contribute to the research culture across the University, the professions and the wider practicing community; and become a recognised first port of call for industry partners seeking research collaborations to advance health care.

Regenerative Dentistry and Biomaterials

Team leader: Dr Stephen Hamlet

This highly expert group with skills ranging from cell and tissue biology, computing and engineering science, microbiology, surgical expertise and clinical trials are working in collaboration with various national and international collaborators on novel approaches to the regeneration and reconstruction of oro-dental and craniofacial tissues.

Oral Microbiology & Immunology

Team Leaders: Professor Robert Love

This group is investigating various aspects of dental and oral microbial diseases including the understanding of the host response in periodontal infections through identification of relevant microbial antigens in cases and controls, evaluating vaccines with potential to prevent oral fungal infections, the molecular basis of endodontic disease, and development of antimicrobial peptides to manage dental infection.

Public Oral Health

Teams leaders:  Professor Jeroen Kroon

This research group has existing projects with local communities and in collaboration with Queensland Health. The focus of research is oral health promotion, rural and remote oral health needs and the barriers to care.
